Beautification, biodiversity, and bank stabilisation

A joint project with Killarney & District Historical Society and Killarney Bushcare.
What was once a degraded stretch of Gravel Creek between the Heritage Centre and the butcher shop is transforming into a biodiverse ecosystem showcasing an array of Australian native plants and creating microhabitats for wildlife.

How do we keep track of it all?

The project called for a practical, engaging, and low maintenance way to track biodiversity at the project site.

Our solution was a custom-built iNaturalist project dedicated to Gravel Creek.

This approach:

  • Enables Killarney Bushcare volunteers to document the plants, insects, birds, amphibians, and other wildlife
  • Automatically captures all iNaturalist observations within the project area – nothing for users to submit, nothing for volunteers to manage
  • Builds an integrated public record of species presence and spatial distribution
  • Facilitates expert validation and species identification, improving data accuracy and removing the need for observers to even know what they’re looking at!
